It has been some time since our last post! Sorry for the delay! Our class has been working very hard the past couple of weeks. We began this week by having a "Snowball Fight" during our class meeting. During this activity, students wrote their name on a piece of paper and brought it to our circle. They crumpled the paper up into a ball and had a pretend snowball fight for a few minutes. When it was time to stop, they grabbed a snowball and greeted the person on the paper. Next, they gave that person a compliment. We had a great discussion about giving meaningful compliments and receiving compliment with two simple words... THANK YOU. Finally, we imagined that the crumpled up paper represented hurtful words that were said to that person. We discussed how those words can not be taken back and the paper can't be smoothed out to its original state. We discussed how words can hurt others. We know that we should treat others the way we want to be treated and always remember to be respectful.
In math, students explored www.khanacademy.org to practice their math skills. We also watched a brief video about Mr. Khan and how his website came to be. The kids really enjoyed putting a face to the name and voice behind Khan Academy. They also liked to see other kids being interviewed who use Khan Academy and hear how it helps them. Students are encouraged to log on to www.khanacademy.org at home!
In social studies, we researched famous places in Illinois that tourists would like to visit. Some famous places that students chose were: The Willis Tower, Lincoln's Tomb, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Wrigley Field, and the United Center. This week, we used our notes to develop a paragraph about each place and added the information to our Illinois flip book.
During P.E. activity, students had a fun time creating "Push Up Routines" to music. The kids had had to remain in a push up position and create a 10 move routine with synchronized moves.
